What is the NSF AGEP/SBES Program?

The National Science Foundation's Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) Program is intended to increase significantly the number of domestic students receiving doctoral degrees in the social, behavioral and economic sciences (SBES), with special emphasis on those population groups underrepresented in these fields (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders).  Particular emphasis is placed on increasing the number of students of color who complete the Ph.D. and enter the professoriate in SBES disciplines.

Specific objectives of the AGEP program are (1) to develop and implement innovative models for recruiting, mentoring, and retaining minority students in SBES doctoral programs, and (2) to develop effective strategies for identifying and supporting underrepresented minorities who want to pursue academic careers.

The Ohio State University, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Penn State University and Temple University comprise the Great Lakes Alliance for SbeS (GLASS) AGEP Program. The GLASS AGEP recruits, supports and mentors underrepresented minority students who pursue doctoral degrees in social, behavioral and economic science disciplines at alliance institutions.  The seven GLASS universities have long-standing traditions of academic excellence in doctoral education and research, outstanding Ph.D. programs in SBES disciplines, and an unwavering commitment to achieving diversity.

For additional information, view the OSU AGEP-SBES brochure.  To request information about specific SBES programs at universities in the Alliance, complete the Request for Information from AGEP-SBES Partner Institutions form.
