SBS Alums to be Honored at OSU Alumni Association Awards Dinner

6:30 P.M.

The OSU Alumni Awards Dinner will be held on Friday, November 9, 2007 at the Hyatt on Capitol Square in downtown Columbus. A cocktail reception begins at 6:30 p.m followed by dinner and the awards ceremony. For tickets and information, contact (614) 292-2371 or alumniawards@ohiostatealumni.org.

Dr. Ellen Mosley-Thompson (M.A. Geography, 1975; Ph.D. Geography, 1979) and Lonnie Thompson 

The 2007 Alumni Medalist Award "for alumni who have gained national and international distinction in a chosen field and who have brought extraordinary credit to the University and significant benefit to humankind." This award is the single highest honor accorded by the Alumni Association.

Ellen and Lonnie Thompson are responsible for most of the evidence we have today about global climate change and what is happening to our planet. Together, they have led some 50 international expeditions to collect ice cores from the mountains of Africa, South America and Asia as well as data from the ice fields of Greenland and Antarctica to document and retrieve climate records. Ellen and Lonnie Thompson are the "heroes" of Mark Bowen's 2005 book on climate change, Thin Ice: Unlocking the Secrets of Climate in the World's Highest Mountains, and An Inconvenient Truth, the feature-length documentary of Al Gore's grass-roots campaign on global warming.

Robert W. Edmund (B.A. Political Science, 1995)

The 2007 Thompson Alumni Award for distinctive achievement in a career and civic involvement. Rob Edmund is a labor and employment partner in the Columbus, Ohio offices of Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, LLP, and an adjunct professor at Capital University Law School. Rob is the co-founder of the SBS Alumni Society and served as the Society's first president from, 2004-2006.

Carter G. Phillips (B.A. Political Science, 1973)

The 2007 Professional Achievement Award for a distinguished career and for outstanding contribution to the legal profession. Carter Phillips is the managing partner pf the law firm, Sidley Austin and one of the "100 Best Lawyers in America" (National Law Journal). He has argued more cases before the U.S. Supreme Court than any active lawyer in private practice. Carter visits Ohio State several times a year and meets with students in the PSL program to help mentor them on their way to becoming lawyers.
